"Bearings and seals" are important components that enable proper functioning of hydroelectric generating equipment. These components come in a variety of designs and are made of many different materials, depending on site conditions and the specific application. Choosing what type of bearing or seal to use is a complicated decision and requires a great deal of different kinds of bearings.

Ball bearings are used in a variety of markets in a multitude of applications. Industry’s, which use them extensively, include construction, health, agriculture and even aerospace. The industry leader in the construction and supply of ball bearings, Timken specialise in Radial, Angular and Precision ball bearings as well as more intricate spherical bearings and advanced housed units. Timken ball bearings are an industry standard for a reason and those reasons are discussed below.

Radial Ball Bearings are perhaps the most popular and common type of ball bearing. They have an inner and an outer ring that work together to contain the balls and there will be a deep, snap ring groove imbedded in the bearing that will simplify mounting and allow it to hold radial and axial loads from either direction at incredibly high speeds. Size wise they can range anywhere from 3mm around to 600mm and are used in a variety of applications and industry’s.

Angular Contact Ball Bearings There are two general varieties of angular contact ball bearings. Single row bearings can only thrust in one direction but can generally handle larger loads, double row bearings can move in both. Single row bearings can handle larger loads because they are designed so they can be mounted in rows.

Precision Ball Bearings,These are far more specific and generally smaller ball bearings that are used in more intricate and specific markets. There are countless types of precision bearing but the more common ones include thin section bearings (used mainly in rotary joints and gimbals), ball screw support bearings (used primarily in motion control applications) and ceramic ball bearings that can deliver higher spindle speeds thanks to the ceramic balls used in the bearing that increase dynamic radial stiffness.
